The bill would ban firearms for those with misdemeanor offenses involving domestic violence cases. The Democrats know this is unconstitutional. A constitutional right cannot be removed for a non-felony offense. They seek only to subvert the constitution and force the people to defend their rights expensively in drawn out court cases. Laws like this have already been overturned due to the Supreme Court Bruen decision.

This bill amends the current act allowing counties to levy taxes on hotels. While this may provide a short term gain for local governments to pick the pockets of a business sector, in the end, it only adds additional costs of doing business, driving up prices, and reducing tourism and travel.

This is the annual omnibus spending bill which covers everything except education. It was a spending free-for-all this year with 65% of the $1.3 billion dollars spent being pork projects (earmarks). Most of those pork projects are being proposed last minute. Omnibus spending bills are used by legislators to hide their wasteful projects. Rather than up or down votes on given projects which require an open vote, the legislature waits until the last minute and dumps all of the spending into a single omnibus bill. It normally passes without anyone having read it. Both parties are guilty of gaming the system like this for their personal pork with no accountability.

Governor Whitmer cited revenue projections in her budget proposal expecting a $2.5 billion surplus. However, revenue projections are rarely correct. And the actual money coming into government coffers this year has sharply declined. And given the state of businesses in Michigan, it is only going to get worse.

In order to remove control by local school boards, this bill allows the state teachers unions to bargain on merit pay, performance evaluations, personnel decisions, teacher placement, and discipline. In other words, it protects bad teachers by allowing them to be promoted according to length of employment and not the quality of that employment. It removes the school reforms of 2011 that allowed schools to keep and reward good teachers.

Michigan currently has a rules that state energy regulations cannot exceed those of the federal government. This bill repeals that rule.

The purpose of this repeal is to allow the Democrat legislature to introduce a host of new regulations relating to the energy sector. This will result in increased heating and energy costs for both businesses and voters. One needs only to look to California with their exorbitant taxes and fees, rolling blackouts, and high gas prices to see the results of these regulations.

After abandoning childhood education during and after Covid, Democrats produced a free-for-all spending budget full of pork programs that steal monies from direct education and put it into pet projects likes swimming pools, non-profit groups, and new buildings.

Per Gongwer:

“the first all-Democratic government in 40 years, combined with the previous Republican Legislature leaving billions in unspent one-time surplus revenues unused last year, produced an avalanche of spending on items like school pools, new school buildings, funds for career and technical centers and a slew of nonprofits doing work in the education space.”the first all-Democratic government in 40 years, combined with the previous Republican Legislature leaving billions in unspent one-time surplus revenues unused last year, produced an avalanche of spending on items like school pools, new school buildings, funds for career and technical centers and a slew of nonprofits doing work in the education space.

Some of the School Aid Fund surplus also went outside of K-12 for projects: $30 million was appropriated to Michigan State University for an engineering and digital innovation center, for example.

In total, a Gongwer News Service analysis of the education omnibus budget (SB 173) showed $335.4 million in School Aid Fund monies spent on 77 different earmarked items not generally designed to be available to most or all K-12 school districts. If those funds were placed into the foundation allowance, it would translate to another $241 per pupil.”

SB 367: Implementing early voting. https://almenatownshipgop.com/2023/07/18/sb-367-implementing-early-voting/ Tue, 18 Jul 2023 20:53:18 +0000 https://almenatownshipgop.com/?p=329 The bill defines the process for implementing early voting provisions.

The post SB 367: Implementing early voting. appeared first on Almena Township GOP.

The bill defines the process for implementing early voting provisions. Municipalities can elect to provide their own early voting center(s), combine with other municipalities within the same county to offer a multi-jurisdictional early voting center or enter into an agreement with the county clerk to coordinate a county-run early voting center.

The bill requires that under any option, each municipal clerk must file an early voting plan with the county clerk not later than 120 days before the first state or federal election in even-numbered years. Municipalities entering into a multi-jurisdictional or county agreement would only need to submit one early voting plan for those participating municipalities.  At a minimum, each agreement shall cover all the state and federal elections held in an even-numbered year and participating clerks would not be able to withdraw from an agreement until after the canvass of the last state or federal election in that calendar year.

Feel free to call and ask your township or county clerk to find out how poorly implemented this law has been and what a nightmare it’s been for clerks. And given that the State has still not reimbursed townships and counties for costs incurred from previous election laws passed (2020 or 2022), expect it to eat further into the limited resources of local governments.

The bill would add subsidized housing to the list of uses for redevelopment of brownfield projects. This provides developers with a tax subsidy to rebuild in these areas. Apart from the issues on whether housing should be directed towards brownfield properties, brownfield projects directed towards housing provide nice profits for developers and owners, but fail to provide the promised benefits for the constituents the politicians serve.

Melstrom, et al. – “Black and Hispanic households benefit less than White households from brownfield cleanup and vacant land development. Second, owners appear to benefit more than renters from cleanup and development. Overall, these results provide evidence of differences associated with race and housing tenure in who benefits from local land use actions.”

The bill requires employers to share employees’ name, home address, cell phone number, work address location, and personal email address with labor representatives every 90 days.

This is a means for Democrats to provide personal information including home addresses of employees who opt out of union representation. It is a violation of personal privacy and workers should be the ones who decide who their employer can share their personal information with.

Sen. Thomas Albert, R-Lowell, said the bill is an “unwarranted invasion of personal privacy.” Albert said there were no additional safeguards to protect personal information, and added that a bill substitute that wasn’t adopted yet also aimed to divulge employee wage to unions too.
